We are safe at home, Praise the Lord.

The EGM Chile office was successfully moved and after all our US moving experiences, it was amazing to see how it is done in Chile. A couple of young men did most of the really heavy lifting but we were also able to make a significant contribution to the process. Working alongside our Chilean teammates through this crisis has given us a new love and appreciation for each one. There's too much to tell but our hearts are full.

Our departure from the Santiago airport was fascinating. They have come up with a very creative and relatively efficient way of taking care of thousands of passengers and are using only a small portion of the building to do it. Check in was in large tents outdoors with giant fans (it was hot!) and we waited in chairs set up under carports where rental cars were normally parked. There was lots of waiting in long lines (we arrived nearly 5 hours before our flight) but our flight was very close to being ontime.

As our airplane took off, we were looking forward to heading home but at the same time had the overwhelming sense that God had accomplished His purposes on the trip and we wouldn't have changed a thing. Even the earthquake itself was a big spiritual blessing to us as we experienced the power of God in a new way and felt His loving arms around us.

You, our praying family, have been a big way God has expressed His presence to us. "Thank you" falls so far short of the feelings in our hearts.

Coxes Report 203 Aftershocks Over 4.9 in Chile

Hi, Praying Team:

Thanks for your continued prayers. Reports in yesterday's evening news were that since the big earhquake, there have been 203 aftershocks over 4.9. One was 6.3! We have felt many of them, and some have caused us to get in doorways, but it has seemed relatively calm today. We haven't gotten the news yet today, due to meetings, but things seem to be slowing down in the earthquake department.

We have been meeting with the board the last 2 days. Yesterday, I was able to share from the Word and give an update on our ministry around the world to inspire the team here. Today, I shared again from the Word. The team seemed to respond well to the messages and I was thankful to be able to share with them. It was a great moment for us when the board chairman shared with the group how much it had meant to them when we made no move to leave immediately after the earthquake. He said most visitors were headed for the airport as soon as it was possible to get the first flight out, but we had stayed and that willingness to stay and work through things with them had encouraged them so much.

Several of the board members were not able to attend. Nathy, from the North could not get transportation to the meeting. Margarita from Vina del Mar was told by the government that her apartment building is no longer safe to live in and she was moving today. Another of the board members who lives near the epicenter is a physician and has been working night and day in the hospital. Another (a pastor) was unavailable because a member of his church died and he was providing the funeral today. However, those who WERE able to attend, did the best they could and had a productive meeting organizing the upcoming office move and planning for the future of the ministry.

Tomorrow, we will have our rescheduled children's workers conference simultaneously with the Pastor's meeting. No one knows how many we will have but we will do our best to minister to those who come. Some of the original speakers will not be able to attend so we are doing double duty. The team is ready for anything! Sunday, I will preach twice at two different churches. Pray for God's message to come through, whatever and however He wants to do that.

We have heard that all flights out of Santiago have resumed so we are not anticipating a delay in our return to the US. We are weary but praising God and looking forward to finishing well on this amazing adventure. Thanks for coming with us through prayer. Your emails have meant a great deal to us.

Answered Prayers!!

Dear Praying Friends,

Hello again. I hope I'm not jamming up your inbox too much. For some, a little info is plenty and for others, no amount is enough! Thanks for praying either way!

Our teammate, Krysten Norkaitis, arrived today in Santiago from Lima, Peru. We had been told the airport would not be open but they surprised us and she arrived safely today. She took her luggage plane-side and dragged it all the way to immigration, which was also outdoors, on the sidewalk, as the building is damaged and unsafe. We are glad she's here!! Also, an open airport means we will most likely be able to return on time to the States. Please keep this in your prayers, especially as our departure date gets closer.

Our coworker, Daniel Gonzalez, who was trying to get to his family in the South of Chile called a few minutes ago to let us know that he has a ticket for the morning to Santiago. He found some friends in Santiago who opened their home to him while he waited. He is fatigued but relieved. We are happy for him. We told him how many were praying and he was so very thankful for each prayer offered on his behalf.

We have just been told that we will have no running water for the next two days. Water supplies are being shut off in three major cities (including the area where we are) so that repairs can be completed. It is strange to us but to everyone else around us, it seems to be an acceptable way to proceed.

I had shared in an early email that the EGM office here had survived the earthquake without harm, but we went to the office after that and found things to be very different. The officials have ruled the highrise building where the EGM office is located to be unsafe. Though the building was taped off with caution tape, we were given a full tour and even had a meeting for a few hours in the building. The aftershocks continue and it was interesting to be on othe sixth floor of an unsafe building during a strong aftershock!

The EGM ministry was in the process of moving to a new facility but had been held up with government red tape. Now, rules are being bent everywhere and it appears that they may be able to move right into their new building and we may be able to help with the move the day before we depart. God is so faithful. Please pray everything will work out. They are temporarily officing in a Sunday school classroom in one of the local churches, but it is VERY temporary.

Julie had a wonderful meeting with a big group of women today and her message of hope was so very well received. The leaders told us afterward that everyone was buzzing about her talk and that it had really touched hearts. We also met with the team that is working on the EGM Chile curriculum project and we were so encouraged with their willing hearts and determined spirits. The ministry here in Chile will not be stopped....Praise God!!

Update from Joe in Chile - Sunday, Feb 28

Dear Praying Friends,

We finally have internet access! Hooray! We have missed not being able to keep you updated but have definitely felt your prayers and love. When I was finally able to connect to the internet, my inbox was full of good wishes and promises of prayer. We're thankful for our children and our coworkers who worked together to keep you updated with little pieces of information we passed to them in very brief phone calls here and there. Now you are able to get it "from the horse's mouth."

We are doing well and have so much to be thankful for and I want to let you know how God is answering your prayers and give you some more things to bring before God's throne. It's been interesting to follow the Lord through these days, but we are at complete peace and trusting Him.

Our EGM team here in Chile has responded to the challenges with real grace and strength. It seems that our EGM office did not sustain any structural damage, but our director has shared with me that most of what was on a flat surface is on the floor. Our meetings for tomorrow have been cancelled because of the damage to the office and because some of the team members are having difficulty with transportation. The buses are not running and bridge and road damage has resulted in road closures. Even commuter trains are not running due to power outages. The gas stations are packed with people trying to get gas so transportation is certainly in question. We will join the team at the office in the morning to assess the damage and do some initial clean up work.

As far as what is going on in the country is concerned, those of you in the United States are probably better informed than I am. Communication has been very bad within the country with cell phone systems overloaded, power outages, etc. Without internet until today, our only source of information has been word-of-mouth and watching Spanish news reports using a small Spanish-English dictionary to figure out the highlights.

I can tell you that our team and their families are safe and well and determined to keep working through all this. Though the ministry schedule changes continually, I can really see their hearts to remain faithful to the Lord in this time for the sake of the children, children's workers and churches that are looking to them for help with children's ministry. Our director, Daniel Lagos, told me today that "we MUST go forward with rescheduling the children's workers training because the churches are depending on us for help."

Our time in the church this morning was really great. The children's ministry program was cancelled because the aftershocks which still occur are causing people to keep their children at home. In addition, there was a wall in the children's classroom area that was damaged so there was no place for them to meet. The people arranged themselves in areas of the auditorium where there were no lights to fall upon them (several had fallen during the quake) and we were given evacuation instructions as the service began. We met without electricity so there were no lights or sound system, but GOD'S power was evident! I felt an unusual outpouring of God's Spirit upon me as I shared with the people from Matthew 17:1-20 that the God who can move the mountains wants to move in our lives as we serve Him reaching the lost all around us.

Some prayer needs:

1. Our co-worker, Krysten Norkaitis, is still trying to get to Chile from Peru in time for our board meetings Thursday and Friday. The airport is closed at this time and the date it will be re-opened keeps moving. While she waits, she is trying to be an encouragement and help to our Peru team, but is anxious to get to Chile if God is willing.

2. We still have not heard from our teammate Daniel Gonzales. When he left Vina del Mar for Santiago, he went to the place where the ground transportation could be organized and found a massive crowd of frustrated people. While he was standing there trying to decide what to do, someone drove by and said, "Do you want to go to Santiago? We will take you!" He jumped in the car and they left, but we have not heard if he arrived in Santiago. At this point, his only hope for getting home to his family in the South is by air from Santiago where the airports are closed.

3. We want to be a blessing to the team here and to the family that has opened their home to us. We originally planned to be in a hotel for at least part of the time, but that is now impossible and we are so thankful for our hosts. They have been very kind.

4. We are seeking God's direction for decisions regarding the ministry events that were planned. God knows.

Update from Joe and Julie - Saturday, Feb 27

Dear Praying Friends,

You may have heard that there has been an earthquake in Chile. We know you have already been praying for us and we thank you. Before we go much further, we want to say that we are safe and are praising the Lord.

The epicenter of the earthquake was actually in the south of Chile and we are in central Chile. We definitely had the full earthquake experience in our area and it was a very scary thing to go through. The city of Vina del Mar and neighboring Valparaiso, where our EGM office is, has sustained considerable damage. The aftershocks continue every few minutes to remind us of God’s power.

The earthquake hit at about 3:30am and we were scheduled to conduct a children’s worker conference at 9:30am. Still reeling from the effects of the quake, we were encouraged by our Chilean director to come ahead to the conference location. So much preparation has gone into preparing for the conference; it was hard for the team here to cancel. When we arrived a few minutes late, we found three teachers waiting for us that had traveled three hours to come to the training. Just as they arrived at the church, a strong aftershock occurred but even that did not deter them. We couldn’t just send them home after such an effort so a mini-seminar was given for just them. What dedication!

In addition to praising God for His protection, here are a couple of prayer requests we would appreciate you remembering.

1. One of the EGM staff members, Daniel Gonzalez, lives very near the worst of the devastation. He had traveled up to meet us and is desperately trying to get home to his family. So many bridges are out that buses are not running and the airport is closed. He is also a pastor of a local church and is anxious to return to his home area so he can be a support to his church family.

2. We need wisdom regarding how to continue with our trip. God has us here at this time for a reason and we want to accomplish His purposes, whatever that might be. We are taking it an hour at a time at this point.

3. Our team member, Krysten, who was to arrive today will not be able to get here from Lima, so we are also trusting God for direction in that situation.

4. Pray that we can communicate well with the Chilean family with whom we are staying. They are amazing but we have had our challenges with the language barrier.

Dear Praying Friends,

We believe God has called our prayer partners to serve just as surely as He has called us to serve with EGM! We need your constant prayer and count on it but are especially mindful of that need when we are traveling internationally. We’re heading to South America! Would you like to come with us through prayer? Please do!

This trip is one Julie has dreamed of since she was a 6th grader when she learned about South America in school. Our trip was originally taken off the docket because of budget concerns, but God moved in the heart of a family who has prayed for us and supported us in the ministry for many years. They donated enough airline miles to completely cover the airfare for the trip, making it possible for us to go. We are humbled and thankful for this wonderful gift.

Following is a detailed itinerary of our trip and we’d love to know that you will follow us in prayer. Please post this itinerary somewhere where you will see it, then let us know you will be remembering to pray often. We’ve heard that our itineraries have been placed in lots of creative places! Tuesday, February 23
Joe and Julie fly to Lima, Peru (overnight flight). Krysten Norkaitis, EGM’s Latin America regional director will also be with us on this trip. Pray we will be a united and effective team.

Wednesday, February 24
We will meet today with some of the Peruvians who have agreed to serve on the board for our brand new EGM ministry in Peru. We will also catch up with EGM team members John and Heather Chapman, who have been living in Lima and helping this new baby ministry get started. Since this is our first trip to Peru, we are asking God to show us HIS heart for the Peruvian churches, children’s workers and children. Pray also that we can be a blessing to the Chapman’s.

Thursday, February 25
We will meet with more new board members and spend time with the Chapman’s. In the evening, we will participate in a children’s meeting and then share with adults about the international work of EGM. Pray we can be an encouragement to those we meet with and have wisdom to be a resource to these precious leaders. Pray, too, that we can see the Peruvian children the way God sees them.

Friday, February 26
Today, the Peruvian board will have their first official meeting and the ministry in Peru will launch! Unfortunately, we will miss this meeting, but our coworker, Krysten Norkaitis will be staying on with the Chapman’s for the big event. It’s great to have a team! We must fly on to Santiago, Chile, and then travel by car to the coastal city of Vina del Mar, where our EGM office and team is located. In the evening we will meet with those who have organized a children’s workers conference in which we will participate the following day. Pray for safety in the travel and for rest as we stay with a Chilean family. The Chile part of the trip is a whirlwind of activity!

Saturday, February 27
The conference will run from 8:45am to 6pm. Julie and Joe will both share with attendees about the work of EGM around the world as well as workshops on the biblical methods for working with children. Pray for us to have lots of energy and enthusiasm. Also, pray for good understanding among the teachers attending the conference as we will speak through translators.

Sunday, February 28
We will observe Sunday school classes of those who have received EGM training, and then Joe will preach in a church in Villa Alemania, just outside Vina del Mar. Pray for God’s message to be clear as Joe shares about God’s heart for children.

Monday, March 1
In the morning, we will meet with those who organize the EGM training throughout Chile, to share new ideas and provide counsel on their programs. In the afternoon we will meet with the Executive Director, Board Chairman and Treasurer to discuss ministry issues. One area we hope to encourage them in is developing funding for the work from within Chile. In the evening, Julie will share with all the women (about 20) who are involved with EGM-Chile leadership. This is a long day of meetings and we want to have God’s agenda for each one of the gatherings. Pray for Julie to have God’s wisdom as she shares with the women.

Tuesday, March 2
In the morning we will meet with the team that has been working on developing a Chilean EGM Sunday school curriculum. They have completed one year of lessons for three age groups! Pray that we can encourage and inspire them as they look forward to working on the next two years of curriculum. In the afternoon, Julie will speak to about 50 women at the church of one of our EGM staff members, and asks for prayer for the message to cross the cultural barriers to touch the hearts of the women.

Wednesday, March 3
We will enjoy a day of touring the area and resting. Whew!

Thursday, March 4
Joe will speak throughout the day at the EGM Chile Board Retreat, sharing from the Word of God and also presenting material on important ministry concerns. The day will be full. Pray for endurance today and for fresh truths from God’s Word to touch hearts.

Friday, March 5
Today is the EGM Chile Board Meeting and Joe will teach from the Word again and be available during the meeting to provide counsel and also to support Krysten in her role as the EGM-US representative on the board. Pray that our presence in the board meeting will be a blessing to those in attendance.

Saturday, March 6
A large fellowship of pastors from throughout the region will be gathered together for a full day to hear Joe and Krysten share about how EGM has been used of the Lord throughout Latin America and how the Chilean ministry can help them with effective children’s ministry. Pray these leaders will catch God’s vision for the children in their churches and communities.

Sunday, March 7
We will observe Sunday school classes of those who have received EGM training, and then Joe will preach in two churches (in Belloto Sur and in Valparaiso). Pray for an outpouring of God’s Spirit as Joe shares from God’s Word about the importance of children’s ministry.

Monday, March 8
We will travel back to Santiago and take another overnight flight back to the US. We will arrive the next morning in San Diego. Pray for readjustment to our time zone and for refreshment physically.

Dear Prayer Partners,

Well, I am now at home after my adventures in Eastern Europe. I am tired but happy! The trip was a success in lots of ways and I know beyond a shadow of a doubt that God was in it from the beginning to the end. Thanks so much for standing with me in prayer. It meant the world to me!

I already sent an update after the Belarus portion of my trip to those who committed to pray daily (about 25 of you!). The time in Belarus was wonderful, difficult, fun, dangerous, fulfilling, tiring, emotional and exacting! It really was all of those things! The goals set out for the trip were met and it was clear that God was at work among the children, children's workers and churches of that dear country! Our American team had terrific unity and we ALL felt God leading in very real ways. Due to security concerns, there's not really very much I can tell you in writing, but if you would like to have more detail, I'm more than happy to call you. And I mean that! Please let me know if you'd like to have the "inside scoop" on the trip and I'll fill you in! For now, please know that if you were praying, God bless you! I needed it every step of the way and God answered your prayers!

As for the Romania portion of the trip, I have lots to say! I spent a few days in the capital city of Bucharest with our friend and coworker, Alex Bruda. We had the privilege of sharing in a church on Sunday morning and shared briefly with the team of Sunday school leaders. The next day was spent conducting interviews for a second member of our Central Europe resource team who will hopefully join us in April. We have had 18 Romanian applicants for the position and are working through the process of determining God's will in the matter. Some wonderful Christian people have applied and I enjoyed meeting many of them. It was encouraging to talk about EGM with folks who are so dedicated to the task of reaching children!

I was supposed to take the night train to Cluj, but a low-cost flight was arranged at the last minute. After a late-night flight on a very scary airplane, I arrived safely in Cluj for the Romania EGM board meeting then drove with the team to the conference center for the national conference. It was a treat to meet each of the attendees. Our team was rounded out this year by Jan Kraushaar, a short-term ministry missionary from California and Nabila Hanna from Cairo, Egypt. This year, only 7 people out of 90 came on scholarships! At the conference, we had an unprecedented response to the offering taken. Even though fundraising is a new idea to Romanian Christians, 25 Egyptian children were given an opportunity to go to a Christian camp as a result of the fundraising efforts. We shared on the topic of "Spiritual Reality for a Virtual Generation," helping teachers meet kids where they are in the age of technology with the truth of God's Word. As always we were well received and the fellowship was so very sweet!

I'm praying for YOU today that God will express His presence to you in very definite ways and also show you how just how valuable your ministry in prayer can be.

Hungary, Ukraine and Romania – Wow!

May 4-6
Just a short 24 hours after leaving San Diego, we arrived in Budapest, Hungary. What a beautiful city! Sadly, there was no time for sightseeing on this trip. We were able to enjoy the new office which is located in a courtyard of one of the main streets on the Buda side of the river. This has been a great answer to prayer. The location is better, the space larger and the rent cheaper. God is good!

The meetings with the staff and the board were extremely beneficial. We witnessed the solving of some misunderstandings, the healing of relationships and the eagerness of all involved to see the children reached and the children’s workers equipped. God accomplished a lot in a short amount of time.

May 7-10
Arriving in Kiev, Ukraine we were greeted by five Ukrainians, Igor and Natasha, and the regional team. It was quite the welcoming party! We finally met Michael Lozovoi, the new national director for Ukraine, and his family. What a joy they all are! We all traveled together in a van for the next four hours over some beautiful countryside to Uman for the board retreat for this very new ministry.

Friday and Saturday were full days of training for the board. There were a lot of things to discuss and plan and God gave Joe just the right words at just the right time, even if it had to go through translation most of the time!

On Sunday, Joe was asked to speak in the church service. He was the second speaker of the required three messages. Then Joe asked for the blessing of the congregation to dismiss us so that we might experience the children’s ministry going on downstairs. It was good to be with the children, but following the translation we realized how important it will be for EGM to offer training and help to the children’s workers. We’re thankful that Michael will be there to help them reach the children for Jesus.

Those same teachers participated in a training session after a quick lunch. Several churches from the region were represented in the training. They came in very skeptical and stoic, but it wasn’t long before they were laughing and learning new ways to teach God’s Word to the children. This will be the beginning of a new relationship with the churches in this region of Ukraine.

May 11-14
Once the training was complete, the 9 of us jumped back in the van and headed for the city of Dnepropetrovsk where the national office is located. It was about a 7 hour drive over very rough roads, and we were all ready to sleep when we arrived. Michael had made arrangements for Joe and me to stay with a family from his church. Hospitality is BIG in Ukraine and we enjoyed sweet fellowship each evening with this dear family who support the ministry of EGM.

The next few days involved completing Michael’s training, visiting his office and meeting with Sunday school leaders from the area. Another opportunity arose to share with a large group of people from various churches who are in charge of the camping programs in their churches. In every group it was the same reserved manner in the beginning that ended up with extreme interest in the training and the materials available in Russian.

We traveled with Igor and Natasha to Kiev by train late in the day in order to meet with an American missionary who is leading a Bible school for national leaders. We are praying that this might be another key way to reach the churches in Ukraine.

After a quick flight back to Budapest, we met up with our co-worker, Francie Overstreet. Francie is in charge of our leadership development program and joined us to attend two conferences in Romania. We took another long van ride over the border into Oradea, Romania. We’re thankful for Persida, the curriculum development leader in Romania who picked up our weary bones and delivered us to a wonderful place to rest for the evening. All three of us needed that!

May 15-17
We were blessed to spend the next three days at a beautiful, little conference center in the middle of the mountains. It was a perfect setting for the intense training that we delivered to the 15 participants from various regions of Romania. These key leaders will assist our staff in training other children’s workers in their churches and surrounding areas. They are serving on a volunteer basis and are thrilled to be sharing all that they can with their fellow workers who believe in the impact of reaching the next generation. Their dedication was a challenge and we are looking forward to all that they will do in the days ahead.

May 18
Sunday evening we traveled by car with Daniel, the Romanian national director, to Cluj in order to be at the EGM-Romania board meeting early on Monday morning. Joe serves as the EGM-US representative on the Romanian board so his day was spent with the board while Julie spent time with Emese, who is the leadership development director in Romania. Having friends around the world makes the traveling fun. We had been praying for Emese as she faced the possibility of cancer treatment, but praise the Lord, while we were in Romania she received the news that it was not cancer and she is looking forward to her wedding in August.

Daniel delivered us to the train station following a meeting arranged by one of the board members who has a passion to reach out to the families in the churches partnering with EGM. (They are considering a family outreach in the fall which would be a blessing to the parents, reach the children and promote the ministry. Pray that they will be wise as they plan.) The night train is an interesting experience! Let’s just say that with the heat, noise and movement we didn’t get much sleep, but watching the sunrise was amazing.

May 19-24
Time in Bucharest was fun! We enjoy being with Alex and Cami, the regional director for Central Europe, and their little boys. Alex is still waiting for the funds for a vehicle so we traveled by tram and bus to the office for meetings—it takes over an hour to get across town all the while fighting for your place to stand! Alex says he has a spa experience on every commute: a full body massage, aroma therapy and a sauna. We agree! Alex really needs a car!

The time flew by quickly and before we knew it was Friday. We were off again! This time we traveled about four hours north of Bucharest by car to Galati, Romania in order to assist with a church training that was being organized by one of the teachers we had met the previous weekend. She is the children’s director for her church and arranged for other churches in her area to participate in this conference. There were 75 registered and it was great to work side by side with our Romanian team.

One group of 10 men came from a church in a small Roma community (gypsy village) where a revival has been taking place for the past few months--over 500 were baptized recently! These men came because they know it is important to teach the children, but didn’t know where to start. It was so much fun to see these children’s workers light up with excitement as they viewed the curriculum and then learned how to use it effectively. Pray that they will continue to see God at work in their village.

The long drive back to Bucharest was filled with praise for what God had done. Just 12 hours later we were boarding the plane and heading for the USA.

We want to thank you for praying for us. Three weeks is a long time to be away from home and the office. Our hearts were full but our bodies were weary. We came home exhausted and headed into a busy week of preparing for the US board meeting. Now this week finds us getting ready for Jonathan’s graduation and a house full of our kids! Wish you could be here too! We would love to show you all of our pictures and tell you “the rest of the story!”

The Whirlwind Continues...

Dear Friends,

We had such a great time visiting our family and friends in Missouri. “Operation Get-a-Hug” was a huge success! In just 14 days we had 40 meetings with well over 200 people! It was busy, but wonderful. We gathered lots and lots of hugs! It was also hard to say good-bye all over again. We have such a great support system in this part of the world. We praise the Lord for that over and over.

With only two weeks at home before our big trip to Eastern Europe life has been a bit hectic. There’s work to catch up on from being gone and work to prepare ahead of time for meetings we’ll be participating in and office details to take care of for the time we’re away.

Can we humbly ask that you follow us in prayer? We’re thankful that we know we have people praying for us.

Remember that we will be 7-10 hours ahead of your schedule (depending on where you live in the US) so pray ahead! Here are some specifics to pray for while we are on this trip.

Pray for Jon to stay focused on school while shifting from one home to another during this time. It is not easy for us to be away at this time just prior to his graduation.

Pray that God would unify the hearts of the board members as they plan for the ministry and that together we would do the work that God has called us to do.

Pray for clear understanding as we share cross-culturally with the national boards, at the conferences and with individuals.

Pray for strength and safety. There’s a lot of extra traveling on this trip. Planes, trains and automobiles along with mass transit buses and taxis will keep us hopping from place to place. We’ll need God to schedule moments of needed rest.

Julie's back from Romania!

Dear Friends,

Thank you all for praying for our trip to Romania. It can all be summed up in one word—“Amazing!”

It was amazing to be with our team. We praise God for the leaders of the Central European Resource Team (Alex) and the Eastern European Resource Team (Igor). They are men who really love the Lord and have a desire to help the ministry grow in its outreach within their region. I enjoyed spending time with their wives, too and playing with Alex’s two boys. We enjoyed good fellowship and lots of laughs while we were all together in Bucharest. We also were able to see the new curriculum in use on Sunday which was very exciting. Being with the kids was a special treat!

We traveled by train to Cluj and were greeted by the National Ministry Team with open arms. Our team in Romania is amazing! The staff was busy preparing for the board meeting, which we attended, and the national conference for children’s workers. The board meeting was insightful and we again are praising the Lord for people who have a strong desire to minister to the children.

The conference was amazing! We both enjoyed teaching and sharing in between sessions. We met so many individuals who are passionate about children’s ministry. They are thrilled to have ideas and materials to use in their Sunday schools and we’re thrilled to have a small part in helping them to be effective in their ministries.

The second Sunday we attended the evening service at a church in Cluj where we were able to participate in their harvest celebration. The music was amazing and we enjoyed watching the children’s group perform several songs. It was extra special since we had just spent time with the children’s leader at the conference.

Traveling back to Bucharest by night train was not quite as amazing, but still interesting. We said good bye to Igor and Natasha on Monday and on Tuesday Joe, Alex and I made our way to the airport where I boarded a flight back to the States and the boys headed for Egypt.

My trip home was amazingly uneventful. I followed the crowd and managed to make all my connections. My luggage even came with me. It was great to be home, but I am so grateful to have had the opportunity to travel with Joe, to visit friends, to help new teachers, to see new sights—to experience God’s blessings in such amazing ways.

Dear Praying Friends,

Julie and I are heading out soon on another exciting journey. Can we count on you to pray for us? If you are willing to seriously pray for us daily, we’d sure appreciate it. We’re going to be in Romania October 16-28 and then Joe travels on to Egypt. Below you will find an itinerary you can use as a prayer guide. We would love to be on your refrigerator!! Everyday, please pray for spiritual and physical strength for us. Pray, too, for Jonathan, who is at home with school, work and extra curricular stuff.

Thursday, October 16, we will depart Los Angeles, connecting through New York City on our way to Bucharest, Romania.

Friday – Sunday, October 17-19, we will be meeting with Igor and Natasha Fridrikh and Alex and Cami Bruda. Igor is our Eastern Europe director and Alex is our Central Europe director. We’re looking forward to spending time with these couples and hope we can be a blessing to them. (Igor and Natasha lived with us for 6 months last year and the Brudas were in Temecula for 3 months in early 2008.) We’ll be doing regional planning together and discussing very important decisions in the ministry.

Monday, October 20, the Coxes and Fridrikhs will take the train to Cluj, Romania (about an 8 hour journey). Pray for communication issues as we will be on a Romanian train, but will not have any Romanians with us!

Tuesday, October 21, we will take part in the board meeting for the Romanian EGM ministry, seeking to be a blessing to them as we hear reports of the ministry and participate in the decision-making process.

Wednesday, October 22, we will spend time with the EGM-Romania staff. Maybe we’ll get to do something fun this day and relax a bit.

Thursday – Sunday, October 23-26, we will participate in the EGM-Romania National Conference. Julie will teach one plenary session on understanding children and a workshop on communicating effectively in a child’s world. Joe will share in two plenary sessions, sharing how to serve in children’s ministry with a well-defined goal and how to be a model to the children. He will also lead a workshop about the power of influence in children’s ministry.”

Sunday evening, October 26, we will take the night train back to Bucharest.

Monday, October 27, we will take Igor and Natasha to the airport so they can fly to Ukraine and travel on to Belarus.

Tuesday, October 28, Julie flies back to the USA by herself and an hour later, Joe and Alex are scheduled to fly out of Bucharest on their way to Cairo via Athens.

Wednesday, October 29, Joe and Alex will take part in the board meeting for EGM-Egypt. At this meeting Joe will handover to Alex the responsibility for representing EGM-US in the partnership. This is important for the future of the ministry, but will be an emotionally charged time, as well.

Thursday, October 30, Joe and Alex will travel to El Menya, a community on the Nile about 150 miles south of Cairo. We’re told that we will REALLY experience village life on this trip. I’m really looking forward to it, but need your prayer for grace concerning food, restrooms, etc.

Thursday-Saturday, October 30-November 1, we will teach a children’s ministry conference. Alex and I will be team-teaching for the first time. So, we are a Romanian speaker and an English speaker teaching Arabic speakers. How cool is that?

Sunday, November 2, we‘ll participate in Egyptian worship services (and preach?), then fly out – Alex to Bucharest and Joe to the USA.

If you are still praying, all we can say, is “Wow!” and “Thank you!” Our prayer team is amazing and your ministry means so much to us.

Quick Prayer Update from the Coxes

Dear Praying Friends,

Julie and I decided today that we need to get out a quick prayer email to all of you to tell you a pretty amazing reason to praise God and to share a prayer need with you.

1. God has completely healed me (Joe). I have been a little wary of making that kind of bold announcement, just wanting to be submissive to what God has for me and not wanting to presume upon God. However, I just cannot stop praising the Lord every day that I have full energy. Yes, I said "full" energy, just like normal. It's amazing and only God could have done it. Thank you for praying about this. I am absolutely convinced that God did this to provide a testimony to His great power among His people in answer to their prayers.

2. We just finished the first full year of the International Curriculum we are helping our partners create overseas. We have two more years of curriculum to create in order to meet our goal of having a full, 3-year curriculum for three age levels. That's a total of 351 lessons, but are excited about this first BIG milestone! This may be the most important thing EGM has ever done to help our international partners. However, the program is in danger. EGM is going through a tough time right now. The US economy (and the ever increasing ripple effect of the gas prices) affects charitable giving, for sure. Giving to EGM has nose-dived in recent months and we've had to take drastic measures. The office space is being cut in half, several staff members have had to step out of the ministry and salaries have been reduced so that our giving to our international partners can continue. Please pray about this need. We're believing God for a miracle.

Thanks for standing with us in prayer! I have never appreciated our prayer team like I do in these days! God's enemy is at work but OUR GOD IS GREATER! Our God loves children and wants them to know Him. Thanks for your part in praying for us!!

God answered your prayers!

Dear Praying Friends,

I can't stop praising the Lord. He has been so good to me and I can't even really find the words to express my thankfulness to Him. God bless each of your for praying for me throughout my 20 day adventure in Romania and Egypt. The challenges were great, but God blessed in big ways.

I had several challenges with my flights (late/missed flights, rerouting, etc.) and this may have been the reason my luggage was lost in the process. I was without my luggage for the entire trip. I actually received it the day I returned, just hours before departure from Egypt. However, I was just like a little bird. I opened my mouth and God provided all I needed each day...and in some pretty miraculous ways. It was pretty humbling to be the receiver, but it was a great lesson for me concerning what I REALLY need to survive.

So many of you have prayed about my health issues. Thank you!! God answered in amazing ways each day. Throughout the trip, I felt God strengthening me when additional strength was needed and giving me windows where I could rest and recharge when that was needed. I only had 2 days where the extreme fatigue I'd been experiencing surfaced and caused a problem. Here's just one example of God's provision...

One day, while in Egypt, I was in the middle of teaching the children and the fatigue hit me out of nowhere. It was just like a wave that knocked me for a loop. I wasn't even sure if I could finish my lesson, but kept pressing on, doing the best I could. While I was teaching, someone came to the stage and whispered, "We just found out there was a miscommunication and the kitchen has been waiting to serve us for over 30 minutes. Is there anyway you can quickly wrap up your lesson and we can give you time later to continue?" God allowed the need and provided the solution, all within minutes!

The children at the camps filled my heart to the brim. I couldn't have even anticipated how they would minister to me. The teachers were a huge blessing as well. Our EGM staff members and the American team members all worked together in such a seamless way. Although we missed each other (especially on Father's Day) our family survived the trip well and we ALL felt God's sustaining grace. It is a thing of beauty to watch God at work.

Your partnership through prayer has been a wonderful example to our team around the world. When I tell them about you they are amazed that I have a team who is so faithful in prayer. I'm trusting God to bless you big. Thank you from the bottom of my heart.

Cox Family Prayer Update - Health and Travel News!

Dear praying friends,

I have never received so many responses to a prayer update as I did with this last one where I told you about my health issues. What an encouragement to have so many of you send a quick note to say you'd be praying. A SPECIAL thank you to those who prayed!

The doctors are puzzled about my health issues. The tests have come back without results that point to a clear diagnosis. The general consensus is that there is still some viral activity in my body that has been causing the fatigue. How long this will last is a big question in everyone's mind. Without a clear diagnosis, it's difficult to know what treatment options to consider. I still have good mornings, which is what really makes the doctors scratch their heads (if I had the fatigue all day everyday, things would be clearer to them). As I write this I have had two good days. A good day is one where I have enough energy to be at the office almost a full day. I'm praying this will continue and that the hours where I can function normally will increase every day.

I am still scheduled to leave for Romania June 7 and will continue on to Egypt June 10. I feel definitely that God is leading me to move forward with the trip and so I have not cancelled. If I EVER needed you to pray me through a trip, this is the time! Please pray that I will find times of rest as they are needed and that God will show Himself to be strong when I am weak. I'm still asking everyone to pray, along with me, for complete healing. However, if God chooses to allow the weakness, I know He can and will receive glory through this part of my journey.

The two camp/conferences are a combined group of children AND adults. There are training times for the teachers and times where they USE the training with the kids. I'm really looking forward to it! A prayer request that's hard to share

Dear Praying Friends,

It's not easy to admit weakness. It's much more fun to write to you and ask for prayer for the next great ministry adventure. But today, I'm just plain weak and I need you to stand with me in prayer. As you know, I was in a pretty serious car accident during my last trip to Ukraine and Belarus. I was just so thankful to be alive afterwards! God literally saved my life and I will never stop praising Him for that. During the days after the car accident, I wrote off any physical symptoms, chalking them up to the trauma.

The day after I got back, I began to have more severe flu-like symptoms and was VERY sick for several days. The doctor called it a virus and told me I couldn't fly to St. Louis according to schedule. So, we postponed and shortened our trip to St. Louis, but I was able to travel even though I had to have a wheelchair in the airport part of the time. I even improved some while I was there and the Lord strengthened me for the meetings that He arranged for us.

Unfortunately, after I got back to California, I began to experience real fatigue as well as muscle weakness and soreness on a daily basis. Thinking it was just that I needed time to get over the virus, I just rested alot and waited. However, it's been a month now and I'm still having real problems with fatigue. I start off pretty good in the morning, but after just a few hours of work, I begin to have trouble thinking clearly, lose all energy and even have trouble speaking clearly at times. At that point, I just MUST go and rest. Blood work shows levels in the normal range. Of course, everyone I talk to has an idea of what this could be. I am asking God for healing and for wisdom to know from HIM what to do next.

I'm scheduled to leave for Romania and Egypt on June 7 and would very much like to make the trip since the national Christian leaders have gone to a lot of trouble to prepare for me and the team of Americans traveling with me. I realize this is all a loving gift from God and I want to get from Him what He wants for me through this. I really HAVE just rested and rested, but progress is very slow and it's confusing when we don't know what we are dealing with. I keep hoping I'll wake up tomorrow feeling good again.

When I asked you to be a part of my prayer team, I asked if you would be willing just to stop and pray when you got an email from me. I sure hope I can count on those prayers today. Please pray for Julie, too. This hasn't been easy on her, either.

Greetings!

I am so thankful that you have been praying!

Joe called to let me know that he was in a car accident on his journey from Ukraine to Belarus. The driver (not Joe!) lost control of the vehicle when he tried to avoid an animal that was in the road. The car rolled twice before it settled upside down in the woods. There were four people in the car and they all walked away without serious injuries. The police were surprised that they were able to survive the crash. God was certainly looking out for them!

Joe lost his glass's knee was hurt, but the x-rays revealed only a strain--not a break! Pray for him as he continues with the trip as planned.

Prayer Update - 3/28/08

Dear Praying Friends:

We're entering into a season where your prayers will REALLY be needed. What a privilege it is for us to be able to email you, knowing you WILL pray for us! Thank you!! Here's what's going on...

On Saturday, March 29, we depart for Phoenix, Arizona where we will join a team from Calvary Church in St. Peters, Missouri. We're excited to work alongside our dear friends and ministry partners from Calvary as we head down to Kino Bay, Sonora, Mexico. Through April 5, we'll have opportunity to conduct a training for children's workers in the region, help in some neat direct children's ministry stuff and visit an orphanage and drug/alcohol rehab center.

After a few days at home, I will head for the airport again, this time journeying to Kiev, Ukraine where we will conduct an orientation for the new Ukrainian board members who have agreed to serve as the new Ukrainian ministry is established. I'll be working alongside our regional resource team director, Igor Fridrikh. It will be FUN to be a part of some of the first steps to seeing an official ministry established in this country where so many children's workers are looking for training, resources and encouragement.

After the Ukraine meetings, I will go for the first time to Minsk, Belarus. During the days I am there I will evaluate the ministry work and seek to be an encouragement to the team there. In order to protect our ministry partners, I'll not go into further detail as to my activities during this week. It is enough to say that there are very real dangers and pressures for believers in Belarus and I'm COUNTING on the covering of your prayers during this portion of my trip.

I will be home for just a couple of days before we leave again for the St. Louis area. We're beginning the process now of setting up meetings with our friends and ministry partners in the area. We'll have about 10 days to see EVERYBODY!! A good portion of our support team resides in this area and it will be great to see them. We can't wait to give everyone an update on the ministry and thank them for their support and prayers over the last almost 2 years in EGM ministry! Our new team member, Alex Bruda, from Romania, will be joining us for part of that time so that we can introduce him to our supporting "family." (NOTE: If you're in the area, we WANT to see you while we're there. Please email us to let us know when we can connect with you!)

Prayer Update - 2/11/08

Dear Praying Friends,

Normally, I have emailed you just prior to a trip, giving you my itinerary and asking you to pray me through it. However, due to a communication glitch, the email requesting your prayers in advance did not go out. Therefore, I'm sending you now a report on the trip instead! I'm sure you were praying (as the dates for the recent trip to Egypt were outlined in our most recent newsletter) so THANK YOU FOR PRAYING!

I was pleased this time to be able to join a team from Voyagers Church in Irvine, California (about an hour or so from where we live in Temecula). It was so great to see all the gifts of the different team members being used by the Lord in the lives of Egyptian children's ministry leaders.

Upon my arrival, the 10 of us piled into a minibus and a car and headed toward Alexandria, 3 hours away. The conference center where the children's workers conference was to be held was right on the Mediterranean Sea and the the view was spectacular even though the weather was the worst they'd seen in 15 years!

In spite of the horrible weather, 230 children's workers arrived within a few minutes time. The group was mostly young people and there were LOTS of men. This is an unusual sight at a children's workers gathering. Women ages 30-50 normally make up the majority of the group, but not at this conference. Every spare minute, on every break, attendees inundated team members with children's ministry questions - about everything from classroom discipline challenges to complex spiritual issues.

I was taken aback by the number of children's workers asking me about sexual abuse. It seems that the problem is growing but the society is not growing in it's ability to deal with the issue. Every teacher who asked me about it said that their fear was that the parents would blame the child if it were known what was going on. Egypt is a spiritually dark place and this is just one more confirmation of that fact. The conference center was called Beit El Salaam, which means "place of peace" in Arabic. It was truly a haven for these storm beaten servants. It's not easy being a evangelical Christian in Egypt, let alone a children's worker. These precious people were so in need of encouragement. They packed into the worship center for every session - no one skipped out of various sessions as you see at American conferences. They were so eager to hear what was shared and took copious notes during every class.

At the close of the conference, most attendees boarded buses headed to the various locations throughout Egypt. Some would travel several days on various modes of transportation before they would eventually get back home to rest. We boarded each bus and bid farewell with a prayer for safe journeys. As I was saying goodbye, I thought of you.

What a privilege to know these people and serve them. What a privilege to know that boys and girls in churches and communities throughout Egypt will be touched by the ministry of this conference. What a privilege to be sent by you, our prayer and financial supporters. Your ministry of prayer and giving is making a difference for real people like Yousef and Meham and Sylvia and Michal and Mofida and Ayad and...Joe and Julie and Jonathan.

Prayer Update - 10/22/07

Wow! I am in Cluj, Romania today and just finished a great day of staff training with the new staff team here. I shared some leadership training materials on the subjects of Caring For Ministry Leaders, Effective Teamwork in Ministry and Being an "Equipper" Rather Than a "Doer." The team really responded well and I really feel God will use their unique set of gifts and abilities in amazing ways.

The weekend was incredible, too. On Sunday, I got to share with a group of around 200school age children in a large Pentecostal church here in Cluj. Afterward, we observed a teacher of 5th graders who was using the materials our EGM partners have produced here. She is a direct product of the training and mentoring she's received through the Romanian staff here and the American summer ministry teams that have come to her church. What a joy to see her effectiveness in sharing God's Word with the kids and to know you and I had a small part in that!

In the afternoon, I was invited to share at the Hungarian Baptist Church. It seems strange to be in a Hungarian service while in Romania, but there is actually quite a large community of Hungarians in Romania and the Hungarian Baptist Union has a large number of churches. It was great to share with them and thank them for their part in the ministry of reaching the children (this is the church of one of our staff members). Following the service, we enjoyed an AMAZING Hungarian dinner! MMMMMMMM!

Tomorrow morning, I'm off to Kiev, Ukraine and am counting on your continued prayers for me. Igor Fridrikh and I will be sharing with denominational and church leaders about the launch of our minstry in this country. It's my first time there.

I spoke to Julie via the computer for a brief moment a few moments ago and things are going well at home. She even had our grandson, Noah, at the house for the weekend! (I'm jealous!) She thanks you for your prayers, as well. She's busy coordinating the trip I will make with the team going to Oaxaca in the south of Mexico (a children's workers training event) November 12-17. It's so great to have her there, seeing to the details of the ongoing work of EGM and coordinating communications. I'm so thankful for her.

Prayer Update - 10/19/07

Dear Praying Friends,

You have been so faithful to follow us and cover us with your prayers. Please don't stop! I can't tell you how important it is!! We feel God's provision, protection and encouragement so often and KNOW we can link it DIRECTLY to the prayer support we receive!

EGYPT
Julie and I felt God working in significant ways during our trip to Egypt last month. It was obvious that He had gone before us to prepare the way and we were able to encourage our staff and board team there. I enjoyed sharing Bible studies from the life of Elisha and God moved in hearts as a result. We both saw the Lord opening doors for informal strategic conversations as well as good results from the board meetings. We felt our time there was well spent on a number of levels. We even got to put our toes in the Red Sea - amazing! Praise the Lord for our team of prayer partners and financial supporters who made this trip possible.

MOVING
We are all moved into our new place (see new address and phone below). We love it and are so thankful that our son, Joe, was able to come out from Missouri to help us move! Things went fairly smoothly and we're thankful!! Believe it or not, I was called for jury duty in the midst of all the move, and was assigned to a case lasting a full month! God miraculously moved in the heart of the very "by the book" judge and, though not excused from serving, I WAS able to postpone my service to February. Whew!

JULIE'S NEW JOB
Now that our EGM president has a new full-time assistant, Julie is, once again, able to focus her time and energy on the plethora of special projects that continue to surface in the very quickly growing EGM ministry. Right now, she's putting the final touches on an international staff member's manual with loads of policies and procedures that will make our work stronger around the world. It's been tedious and complicated but the result is pure beauty!! She's also editing some training materials and other resources that will help US churches as they participate in short term ministry partnering with churches in EGM countries.
